Inspiration for his
tunes :
BOB'S FANTASY
: This tune is dedicated to
piper Bob Smith and was prompted by his fantasised selection of a pipe band from
the members of the Caber Feidh Club. Robert Smith B.E.M. Bob was the foundation
president of the Caber Feidh Club. He joined H.C.P.B. as an 11 year old and
continued as a piper for 48 years. He served the band as Secretary,Vice
President and V.H.P.B.A. delegate. He was made a Life Member of both the
H.C.P.B. and V.H.P.B.A. For 16 years he was president of The Melbourne Ladies
Pipe Band. For his services to the pipe band movement he was awarded "The
Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal" in 1977, and he was again honoured the following
year, 1978, with the awarding of The British Empire Medal.
THE CABER FEIDH
CLUB : This composition was
written, by Ian Matheson as a tribute to The Caber Feidh Club, and at a recent
meeting of the executive committee it was unanimously adopted as the official
signature tune of this club, for which we thank Ian very
much.
AILEEN'S ANTICS
: Is dedicated to the
composer's wife of 44 years, a period over which the composer contends he has
had any amount of time to observe this lady's antics.
CALLUM'S BIRTHDAY
: A tune dedicated to the
composer' s grandson, Callum Matheson, born June 30th, 1994.
LOCH ERERAY
: Loch Ereray is situated at
the western end of the village of BRUE, Isle of Lewis, Scotland, - birthplace of
the composer's father, Peter.
WM. MCDOUGALL
OF BERWICK : This gentleman became associated with The Hawthorn City
Pipe Band when his son, John, joined as a drummer. He was treasurer of the
H.C.P.B. from 1960 to 1969, when he took on the dual role of President/Treasurer
from 1970 to 1981. He retained the office of President for a further two years
until 1983. In recognition of Bill's service to the band he was made a Life
Member of the band.
PIPE MAJOR
DUNCAN MACLENNAN, M.B.E.
: Duncan was a good friend and
associate of the composer.
After a distinguished military career and his
services to Pipe Bands in general, and as President of the V.H.P.B.A. Duncan was
justly rewarded with a "Membership of The Most Excellent Order of The British
Empire."
GOING HOME
: A favorite spiritual of
Ian's, and this is the result of his desire to arrange the music for the
bagpipes
